The magic of a snowfall should be experienced at least once in a lifetime by everyone. When the fervent snowflakes drift down from the sky and encompass the earth in a white sheath, a sense of sublime can overwhelm you. India, being a tropical country doesn’t see snow in most places. But luckily, there still are pockets tucked away between hills and mountains where you can experience the divine beauty of a snowfall. Here, we break away from the regular Shimla-Manali-Nainital and explore the other underrated gems.

1. Patnitop (Jammu & Kashmir)

Snow Season : December to March

Located in the Shivalik range of the Himalayas, Patnitop is a small hill resort, filled with the magnificent pine and deodar trees. The Chenab river that flows through it adds to it’s allure. This hill station is filled with activities, like paragliding, snowboarding, skiing, to give you your much desired adrenaline rush.

2. Auli (Uttarakhand)

Snow Season : January to March

Auli is a small hill station which has newly entered the list of tourist places in India. It’s slopes covered in snow make it good for skiing. The panoramic vista and the stretches of mountain tops make it ideal for a relaxed vacation.

3. Narkanda (Himachal Pradesh)

Snow Season : December to January

Located quite near to the popular tourist destination of Shimla, Narkanda is a small, cozy town, with snow capped peaks. Narkanda is mainly for people who love a quiet holiday with moments passing by slowly so that they can enjoy every bit of beauty of the place. About 17 km from Narkanda is Thanedar, a place known for it’s apple orchards, which are often called the best in the country.

4. Dalhousie (Himachal Pradesh)

Snow Season : November to February

Located about 144 km away from the state capital of Gangtok, it’s beauty has earned it the title of ‘Switzerland of Sikkim’. The only glitch is, you need special permit to visit this snowy heaven.

6. Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh)

Snow Season : December to January

Mountains, dense forests, gushing streams, majestic waterfalls; you will find everything here. Tucked away in the North-Eastern region of India, Tawang has been so far, less explored because of the bad condition of the road leading to it. But once you reach Tawang, you will know why all the hardship is worth it.

7. Lava (West Bengal)

Snow Season : November to February

Located in the district of Darjeeling, Lava is a unexplored beauty. Not just snow, but the whole town can allure nature lovers into staying there for the rest of their lives. There is a small monastery nearby, cottages you can stay in that offer a panoramic view of the mountains and the forest. The place is disconnected from modernisation and hence might be a little difficult for some.
