Heads up! This article is going to be entirely on sanitary napkins. So, if anyone considers this as a taboo and goes all ‘chee’ on hearing about it, I would advise you not to continue reading this. But, if you are an individual with a rational thought process and wishes for an open society where such issues are deliberated upon, then this write-up is just for you.
The Padman is an upcoming movie ready to hit the silver screen, this Republic Day. Based on the life of a real superhero Arunachalam Muruganantham , it tells the story of a school drop-out who hails from Tamil Nadu. Muruganantham is considered a social entrepreneur and appreciated for his invention of a low cost sanitary pad manufacturing machine. His aim was to help and create awareness among the rural women to get access to affordable and hygienic menstruation practices.
Not all superheroes wear capes. At a time when menstruation was ( and, is still) veiled by superstitions and almost no attempt to see it as a biological process, the real Padman’s effort was one to be respected. It was a concern to please his newly wedded wife. But soon it became a mission for him, a mission to make hygiene accessible to the “mothers of India”. He is a superhero in the real sense, someone who saw the plight of lakhs of poor rural women who had to walk, often miles, to get access to healthcare.
Akshay Kumar, who has stepped into the shoes of Muruganantham, explains the subject as an “honest” one that needs to be brought to the audience, as reported by The Indian Express. The movie is directed by R. Balki and produced by a string of people including Twinkle Khanna, Akshay Kumar himslf under the banner of Sony pictures. Alongside Akshay Kumar, we will see Radhika Apte featuring as his on-screen wife, Sonam Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan in a cameo. The movie is going to be a light-hearted comedy-drama and is already grabbing a lot of attention.
Muruganantham was also featured in the list of the ‘Top 100 Most Influencial people in the World’ by TIME Magazine in 2014. In 2016, He was awarded the ‘Padmashri’ by the Indian Government. But, this movie is not about his awards and accolades. It is about his journey. It is about the process to bring a change. It is about turning your vision into reality. This movie is not just another biopic with songs and merry dances. It is an inspirational story about hard work, integrity and perseverance.
Muruganatham’s story is an insiration to all of us. It is an inspiration for us to change the way we view things especially our poor understanding of periods. It is an urge for the Indian masses to be sensitive about the health of women which ultimately affects the health of the country. Despite the hardships one faces, the story of Muruganantham tells us once again that nothing is impossible once you start having faith in yourself. Who should see this movie? Basically, everyone. Old or young, men or women, every Indian should welcome this movie with arms wide open.
